Personal marathon, martial arts, fencing and a rock'n'roll world championship await in October

September of the Graz Sports Year was tough - but October is not really inferior to it! Apart from numerous other events that can be found in the event calendar, the people of Graz can look forward to four highlights from different sporting sectors - the personal marathon, a martial arts weekend, an intensive fencing focus and a rock'n ' Roll World Championship!

The state championships in skydiving, the “Let's Go Ladies” initiative, the “Let's Go Caddy” golf campaign, the day of sports and the 1st Graz Inclusion Run are over, now the new highlights continue. “In September, we started off into autumn with great emotion, and that's how it continues now,” says Sports City Councilor Kurt Hohensinner“This month, too, the focus will be on popular sport and low-threshold exercise, such as the 'Your personal marathon' campaign. We want to get even more people excited about sport and exercise, especially our children and young people. We have currently evaluated the numbers of school examinations by the medical service in Graz, with some alarming results. Around twice as many first-class students are overweight today than in the 2018/19 school year, with an increase from 7,5 to 15,12 percent. We have an urgent need for action here and we must continue to anchor sport in kindergartens and schools. "

Your personal marathon

We don't reveal anything new - October in Graz is traditionally marked by the marathon, thousands of runners will again be active over different distances on October 9th and 10th. In the sports year, however, there is also a completely new variant of it - from October 10th to 31st, everyone should complete their “personal marathon”!

The goal is to run or walk 42 kilometers and more during this period, whether in one piece or over several days. In the end, it must be understandable that a marathon distance was covered within these 22 days. It makes no difference whether this is proven with the help of one of the numerous fitness and running apps or whether photos of the kilometers covered are transmitted. All information about participation can be found here: www.letsgograz.at/deinmarathon. As with previous projects (Seven Summits, Let's Go!

All those who enter this with the password "Marathon" [email protected]  send, take part in the raffle for great prizes. All participants can look forward to a Let's Go running shirt and a Let's Go finisher medal!

Sigrun Passelatwho, after having amputated a leg a few months ago, collected more than 6.000 euros for the Styrian Cancer Aid thanks to her conquest of the Schöckels and is also a testimonial of the Graz Marathon, will complete the entire distance as a hybrid handbike competition. “I am delighted to be the patron of the 'Personal Marathon'. For me, sport, even with a handicap, is still very important. Maybe I'll move and motivate one or the other to join me and declare war on their weaker self. Everyone should cover 42 kilometers in 22 days, even if it sounds like a lot. If you then spread this distance over several sections, it is not that much anymore. Exercise contributes to a healthy lifestyle - if I can do it, you can too! "

"Let's go! Martial Arts “- that Martial arts weekend for everyone

From Aikido to Kickboxing or Jiujitsu, from Karate to Hapkido and Taekwondo, from Kung Fu to Wing Chun, from Ninjutsu to Taiji Quan - hardly anything is missing at the “Let's Go! Martial Arts Weekend” on Saturday, October 9th and Sunday, October 10th October in the ASVÖ hall (Herrgottwiesgasse). The Graz martial arts clubs present their extensive range of health promotion and self-defense options on three mat areas.

On this martial arts weekend in the ASVÖ hall, on the one hand, body and mind are to be trained and brought into harmony, on the other hand, a type of relaxation that is new to many is to be conveyed. Beatrix Hütter, five-time world champion in kickboxing: “It is a great initiative of the Grazer Sportjahr to be able to try out a variety of martial arts on one weekend, as these are becoming more and more popular and are very popular. However, some of them are largely unknown to the general public - you might discover something you didn't even know existed. We want to convey how much fun it is to try martial arts and how balanced you feel afterwards. "

The sport of fencing is becoming the focus

In October, fencing becomes the focus of interest, filling the format as seldom before. Under the title “Nothing for Princesses”, girls between 7 and 14 years of age have the opportunity to learn about fencing under the professional guidance of an experienced trainer. Wheelchair users can also have their first experiences with this sport under the motto “It's all about the point”.

The most outstanding project is certainly the “Let's Go! Fencing Challenge ". In this, the city asks the best StLFC athletes to duel. All Grazers aged 16 and over who have not yet practiced this sport intensively are invited to defeat the currently strongest fencer from Graz together after a crash course in modern sport fencing. Kurt Hohensinner: “Nine Graz residents who have learned the basics of fencing in a fast-track process will challenge Moritz Leitner, currently the best fencer in Graz, with a sword on October 22nd as part of Active Friday from 15 p.m. on the main square. “In order to give the inexperienced amateurs a chance, Leitner will of course have to carry a hit handicap.

Everyone who would like to take on this exciting challenge is invited to practice in the ATG hall on Tuesday, October 5th and Tuesday, October 12th from 17.00:XNUMX p.m. Team.

Rock'n'Roll World Championship, European Championship and World Cup

Around 800 participants from 13 nations will be there on Saturday, October 9th and Sunday, October 10th in the ASKÖ-Halle in Eggenberg, if Graz is part of the sports year within a short period of time (the Mountain Bike Eliminator World Championship and the 1st Special Olympics World Dance Championships are still fondly remembered) will once again be the venue for international championships.

The Rock'n'Roll and Boogie Club Formation 88 organizes the world championship in the category ladies formations, the European championship of girls formations as well as six other world cup competitions. The sports director Birgit Berger: “It will be both musically and rapidly for two days. I do not only recommend dance sports enthusiasts to take a look - the competitions are visually attractive as well as extremely challenging from a sporting point of view. ”For more information see www.formation88.at.

Martina Winkler, the managing director of Merkur Fitness GmbH, about Merkur's motivation to support the sporting year: “We are happy to be part of this wonderful 'get up and just do' sport project. Sport and exercise are things that cannot be neglected if you want to lead a healthy life. Focusing on your physical and mental health is crucial and this well-being is very important to us. "
